Valentine’s Day is almost a month away! If you’re thinking of getting pictures done of your little love, you might want to consider making a tulle tutu. They are so pretty and your little girl will feel like a ballerina in it.
Making your own tulle tutu is easy, inexpensive, and all you need is a half a day to make it. Let’s get started!
You will need:
- 7-8 rolls of 6” wide tulle if you want a long ankle length tutu, or 3-4 rolls if you want a shorter one
- ½” wide elastic
- Embellishments (optional)
Step #1: The waistband is the first step in making the skirt. Cut the length you need to fit your little girl.
Tip: Since you are using elastic, you need to cut less than the size you measure around your girl’s waist. The best way to do this is by using a measuring tape. Get the size of her waist by wrapping the tape around her and then subtract 4 inches. This is how much you should cut.
Step #2: Sew the ends together tightly. You can use a sewing machine if you have one. Otherwise, sew it by hand.
Step #3: It’s time to cut the tulle! Cut strips of tulle. These strips should be double the length you want on her. Many people cut 22” strips of 6” wide tulle for a short tutu. The length will be 11 inches from the waist. If you want it longer, you can measure down to where you want it to fall from the waist of the wearer and then double that number.
Continue to cut strips until you have used 3-4 rolls for a short tutu and 7-8 rolls for a longer one.
Tip: The more strips you cut, the fuller the skirt will be on your girl.
Step #4: After you have all of your strips, take one strip and fold it in half. Place the loop inside of the elastic, and then take the bottoms of the tulle and pull it through the loop to make a knot on the elastic.
Continue to do this all the way around the elastic. As you’re going around the elastic, push the knots together. This will stretch the elastic, so you can add more tulle onto it. You should continue to do this until you can’t see any more elastic.
Well, you’re done unless you want to add a second layer.
Add a Second Tier to the Tutu
If you want a two tier tutu, you’ll need to cut strips from 2 to 3 more rolls of your 6” wide tulle. These should be shorter than the length of the skirt – about 8” to 10” shorter.
Take these strips you’ve just cut and tie them like you did with the first tier, but put them in between the first knots. This will create the second layer.
You can always add embellishments to your tutu such as:
- Satin ribbon on the bottom and top
- A bow
The options are endless!
